I have found both activities useful and enjoyable, because I got to share them with another person. I really like working with others because it allows for moments of discussion and exchange of ideas. You can create something original and creative that otherwise you would have never thought of alone. This is particularly the case when planning as the different members of the group can make contributions based on their experience and area of expertise.
I must confess that I wasn’t thrilled about the idea of recording a video because I don’t feel comfortable in front of a camera. However, doing it with another person helped me relax.
I am glad working in pairs helped. I understand some people feel intimidated by the camera. However, if we expect ss to do something similar then we need to set an example. If I don't feel comfortable myself I cannot expect my ss to do so.
I did not attend last class but I had to prepare the video and my feelings were similar to Clara's. I would love to do a task like that with my students but when I had to do it I felt weird. However, because I worked with a partner, I had fun and enjoyed doing it.
As regards the sequence, as I was absent last class, I am doing it on my own, but taking into account previous experiences, I think working in pairs is extremely enriching. We can benefit from each other's knowledge and experience, also we can come up with a lot of ideas. It is great to have more than one opinion and to have different perspectives.
I enjoyed making the video, it was helpful because it helped me revise some of the content from previous classes. The editing part was more stressful since I have never used flipgrid before, but I think it turned out okay.
I liked the class because we were able to work in pairs, discuss ideas and try to apply Nunan's steps. It was helpful to have time to plan and not rush trying to think of ideas and tasks. Also, building on the final task we thought of the previous class was really interesting, I liked that there was a connection and we were building on previous knowledge.
Glad to hear you find the activities useful. They are thought and planned with a purpose in mind. I also learnt to use Flipgrid during quarantine. This is what will remain after this is over. Everything we have learnt will remain!
Good evening! I really enjoyed making the video with Mechi because her ideas made me in turn think of ideas that I otherwise wouldn't have thought of if I'd done the video on my own. As to planning in groups, it is definitely a great way to plan in my view, because two heads are better than one, and in my experience, my plans are better when I make them with someone else. If there is one thing that was a bit hard to deal with was having to use activities from that unit of the textbook in our task-based plan. I understand, anyway, that that may well be what we will have to do in our jobs. The thing is that we had chosen a final task that was completely disconnected from the topic of the book unit (we didn't know this final task would lead to a whole sequence), so when the time came to plan the sequence AND use activities/exercises from the book, it was a bit too forced. If we had known we were going to have to use the whole unit, we would have planned a final task that was more connected to that topic.
I see your point. I should have told you before. I think I mentioned you were going to develop the sequence later but maybe I failed to mention that it was based on that final task. Thanks for your comment.
Preparing the script and setting the purpose of the video was rather simple, however, filming myself was really hard. I haven't got used to this type of performance yet. I think recordings are more demanding than any typical spontaneous presentation I could deliver in the classroom at school. Doing this task in pairs was good as it allowed sharing ideas and feelings towards the filming challenge!! Planning in pairs was useful and interesting because we had the opportunity of enriching our personal proposals, negotiating and giving arguments for our decisions.
Making a video is certainly a challenge. That is why I chose this procedure to motivate and to get ss to do something different and challenging. Hope you learnt from the experience.
I really enjoyed preparing the video in Flipgrid because it was a new and interactive way of doing something we may have done in a more "traditional" way such as saying our tips aloud. As regards planning in groups, I think it is a great way of exchanging different ideas and achieving a creative outcome. I find it really fruitful because I learn from my classmates' experiences and ideas.
I found creating the video a fun thing to do and it was innovating to me. It is the first time I was asked to film myself and I understand why students may be reluctant to do this. We did find that the instructions weren't completely clear as to what exactly we were supposed to include in the video given that the "main" instructions were provided by the video itself. I always prefer working in small groups or in pairs because I find that more ideas can be exchanged and we come up with very creative sequences. By the end of the class I did find the content quite repetitive and it took us some time to bring back from the previous class the final task since we had not been told that we were going to go on working with it.
Mechi I don't understand what you mean by instructions not being clear. They were explicitely explained both on TEd Ed where you watched the video and then on Flipgrid. The video you watched was the trigger for you to make your own. On the video the teachers provide suggestions and invite viewers to provide their own. So the purpose of the task is made clear. The instructions were in black and white on the two online tools. I don't get what you mean by content being repeated, Which activities are you referring to exactly?
I thought that the idea of preparing an answer to the BBC video was great and it felt like our voices and experiences were as important as the ones from the video. But to be honest, I hate recording myself. Anyway, as Clara wanted both of us to appear in the video, we decided that I'd appear only in one part: the instruction itself but not the example. And of course, we had to record it several times because we couldn't keep a straight face (that part was fun!)
About planning in pairs or small groups, I think that it is always useful because two heads are better than one. We can always learn from our peers and it may be useful to have another point of view over the same topic or situation.
The advantage of this tool (Flipgrid) as I explained during our lesson is that you can use stickers to cover the face so you don't feel so intimidated. That 's why I think it could be a good alternative for ss to answer in a different and more creative manner. I understand some people don't like being recorded so the alternative of covering your face could add fun and help encourage ss. Congrats on your video. It has two parts as you mention!
I think preparing the video on instructions on Flipgrid was fun and also new to me. As Mechi said, this was also the first time I was asked to record myself. I think that doing it in pairs helped me lessen anxiety and it was fun to act it out before recording. Apart from that, I liked that Flipgrid is easy to use, something we have to consider when we want our students to use a specific app or website. As regards planning in pairs or small groups, I do enjoy doing it this way because I think exchanging ideas is key when we plan. Sometimes, if you plan on your own, you get stuck or you run out of ideas. But when we work with someone else we have different perspectives and experiences, so there is constant exchange in order to decide which material, tasks, activities will be included in the plan.

Exactly Camila. That was the purpose, Glad you could make it!
